Op 4 juli 2006 voor de 50ste keer boven.
2006

Over the last 10 years I have cycled this route many times. On the 4th of July 2006 it was the 50th time I completed the ride. Until this lustrum it remained interesting. On arrival at the camp-site, I was surprisingly greeted with coffee and sachertorte.

Departure and arrival is the Schloss camping Aschach in Volders (AU).The camp-site lies at 565 meters altitude. The route is 36 kilometers long v.v and has an average ascend of approximately 25%. The uphill ride takes about 3 hours and 15 minutes and the downhill about 50 minutes. Highest speed is 75 km/h. Click on route for the map. On this map click on the numbers to view the photos.

Route description
Leave the camp-site and cycle to the castle (Schloss Aschach).Turn left just before the gate.Follow this track straight ahead. At the tarmac road, turn left and after 30 meters turn right (signposted Unterberg).Stay on this road for a number of kilometres until you come to a barrier. You arrive at the unpaved track of the ‘Rodelbahn’. On your right, in the deep, you can hear the ‘Voldertalbach’. You have to follow this ‘bach’ all the way up. At the end of the ‘Rodelbahn’, you come again on a tarmac road at the farm called Auer. You are now at 1.011 meters altitude.

Turn right and stay on this steep road until you reach ‘Volderwildbad’. You are now at 1.103 meters altitude. Cross the bridge and from this point the track is unpaved. After a few kilometres you will come to the ‘Voldertalhutte’. Do not turn right but stay on the main track uphill. You are now at 1.350 meters altitude. After about 2 kilometers (you pass a cattle grid) you come to a junction. To the right it is signposted ‘Schwarzbrunnen’. Turn left and follow the track uphill. After this short steep part of the track, you come to a number of huts. You are on the ‘Vorbergalm’ (Alpe Vorberg) at 1.668 meters altitude.

Vorbergalm

Get off your bike and enjoy the view. Direct behind the first hut, on your right, you find a splendidly carved wooden water barrel.

Here you encounter the first gate. It is the intention that you close the gate after passing through. There are still more gates to come, so pay attention during the downhill ride. After a couple of kilometres you come to a flat area called ‘Klausboden’. You are now at 1.821 meters altitude.

Klausboden

After you have passed the little bridge over the ‘Voldertalbach’ and your third gate, it really gets tough. The track becomes rockier and the ascend more difficult .You can distinguish the huts of ‘Alpe Steinkasern’. This is the hardest part of the route. If possible have a look at the scenery around you .If you are lucky you might see stags or ‘Murmeltieren’ (marmots). The huts of ‘Alpe Steinkasern’ are at 2.002 meters altitude.

Alpe Steinkasern

Take a seat on one of the benches and enjoy the splendid views. Now the last part of the route. The track becomes more serious and rockier. The best thing of this part of the track is that, it has not changed during the past 13 years. Harsh, steep, rough and very rocky. I hope it will remain this way in the future. Just before you reach the highest point, you have to cross the ‘Voldertalbach’. Eventually you come to ‘Melkböden’. In the middle is a small hut with a bench. You are now at 2.300 meters altitude and the final point of the route. If you still want to go higher, you will have to go on foot.
